Bierfest Rocked!

August 24, 2007 By: Danny Category: The Day

The house is back to normal. The trash is taken out. The kegs are empty. The inaugural Bierfest has come and gone…and it was awesome! Thanks to all involved in putting the event together. We had 20 fierce competitors, and another 20 in the crowd cheering us on. Who knew we could fit that many people into our house???

The games went great (thanks Brynn and Ryan for the late night pong ball run), the beer flowed freely, and everyone had a hell of a time. There are pictures on the way (would you believe that I didn’t take ANY pictures during the evening)…as soon as I have them, I’ll post them here. Also be on the lookout for official info on ordering a DVD of the event. Every part of Bierfest was captured on video and will be displayed in all its glory.

We have some great ideas for next year - a few key SOBER people in place to make sure everything flows smoothly. The date for next year will be announced shortly, but think mid to late summer.

There are really just two things that I was not happy about…just two.
1) We came up a little short on entry fees…as in 12 people short. I don’t know if some people just forgot the pitch in their cash or if someone “made change” out of the pot. Either way we have a new system ready for 2008.
2) We had two kegs of great beer - 26.4 gallons to be exact. The competition managed to get thru a keg and a half - great job everyone! That left a half keg for the after party, right? Wrong! Some fucking retard went to fill up their glass and walked away with the tap open…draining the last 4 or 5 gallons on my carpet. I expected both kegs to be empty by the end of the night, but I expected all the beer to be in my friends bellys. Did anyone claim the mess? Did anyone fess up? Did anyone stick some extra cash in the pot to cover the wasted beer? NO, NO, NO! Fucking douche bag. If it was you, come clean or never return to my house, you piece of shit!

So as not to end this post on a sour note…Bierfest 2007 was one of the best parties I’ve been to in a long time, and I’m really looking forward to Bierfest 2008!

Prost.

Bierfest is going green - we’re using environmentally friendly Greenware from Fabri-Kal. Specifically the 16/18 ox. cup model GC16S. If you’re interested in practicing this week, I found them at Smart and Final.

While Partying At The Santamarina’s

August 13, 2007 By: Danny Category: The Day

There are a few things to remember when you party at our house…

1. You will most likely drink too much to drive home, so you are ALWAYS welcome to stay the night. If you don’t have a DD (designated DRIVER, i.e. NO drinking), bring some sleeping clothes (chones work, or sleep in the buff, as I prefer), sleeping bag, and pillow. We have limited bed space (depends on how good of friends you all are), and a bit of couch space. What we have lot’s of is floor space…so bring your gear (blow up mattress works great) and plan to hit the floor! If you come without a DD, your keys WILL BE COLLECTED when you arrive, and they will not be returned to you until you are ready to drive (we have tests…hey, a night on our floor beats a night in county!!!).

2. There’s always a change we’ll end up in the jacuzzi, so bring a suit. We will most likely be too drunk to walk to the jacuz, but you never know, so let your inner Boy Scout (and Girl Scout…we always encourage women in bikinis!) shine thru and be prepared!

3.. We keep our AC set in the low 70’s at best, so bring something warm if you’re a wuss. It’s been fairly warm during the night - outside - so you shouldn’t have too much trouble…but just in case…

3. Don’t feel bad about crashing at our place. We’ve got 31 gallons of beer to drink, so you will most likely NOT be sober at the end of the evening. Please stay. If you’re lucky, you’ll end up sleeping next to a real hottie…ME!!! I’ve got Sunday morning off…hope you do too!

6PM Sharp!

August 02, 2007 By: Danny Category: The Day

Bierfest 2007 competition will begin on Saturday, August 18th at 6pm SHARP! Twenty people will compete, any extra people who wish to join the contest will be “alternates.” If a contestant is late an alternate will take their place, and the original contestant will now be an alternate. If a participant becomes incapacitated during the competition and wishes to quit, an alternate will take their place for the remainder of the competition (incurring a points penalty for having a “fresh” drinker).

DO NOT BE LATE - YOU WILL BE REPLACED BY AN ALTERNATE!!!

Registration will begin at 5PM. Those preregistered will have first priority, alternates will be able to register at the same time and will be able to compete based on the above guidelines. The house opens at 4PM for food, fun, socialization. You will also have time to familiarize yourself with the events of the evening. Looking forward to seeing you all at Bierfest!!!

Events / Format Finalized

July 29, 2007 By: Danny Category: Games

The Bierfest committee met last night to discuss the details of the competition. We hashed out a lot of ideas and settled on the final list of games, points, and all that great stuff. Here’s what we decided:
First the games:
Relay Race / Obstacle Course - the first event will be a race around our neighborhood. Bat spin, potato sack race, tire run, pogo stick, stilts, big wheel…each member of your team will take a leg of the race, and yes, beer will be involved in every stage.
Tug of War - classic game of strength with a beer twist!
Beer Pong - Start honing your pong skills because each member will take a turn in this event, and get ready to take a drink…if you lose your point!
Flip Cup - the classic game of drink and flip. Haven’t played it? Each team lines up on one side of a table. First person pounds their beer then sets their cup rightside up on the table and flips it upside down (yes, plastic cups will be used).
Grand Finale - Beer Chug: Das Boot (watch the movie if you don’t know what I’m talking about)

Points
We’re limiting the competition to 20 people - four teams of five (if we have enough alternates for a whole team, a new team will be added). Each team will be awarded points based on the order they finish (1st - 4th) for each event. Your opponent in each consecutive event will be determined by your current standing - ie 1st seed will play 4th, 2nd will play 3rd. The top two teams after four events will compete in the final “winner take all” Das Boot!

One Month To Go - Saturday, August 18th!

July 18, 2007 By: Danny Category: Games, Official Beer, The Day

Just 30 days left to train…are you ready? Here’s an update on Bierfest 2007.

  • Paulaner Original has been chosen as the official beer of Bierfest 2007, and two kegs have been ordered. That’s 31 gallons of beer folks, so be ready to drink!
  • Teams are forming, but we still need firm commitments from many people…get on those comments or send me an email.
  • Some games have been decided, but we’re still open to new ideas. Have a good competition worthy drinking game? Let us know.
  • 4pm is the start time of Bierfest. We’ll begin with food and fun. A little food in the belly before mass drinking is a good thing.
  • The competition will begin promptly at 6pm - DO NOT BE LATE!!! The teams will compete in a series of games in an elimination tournament. Last team standing wins!
  • The conclusion of the contest is NOT the conclusion of the party - we go until we all pass out, or have to go to work on Monday!

Registration / Registrants

July 07, 2007 By: Danny Category: Register

It’s time to get some solid names down for Bierfest 2007. It’s vital to have everyone officially registered so we can be sure to have complete teams, a detailed event schedule, and plenty of beer and food! Read on to find out how to register and who’s registered.

REGISTER
Registration may be completed by comments, email, or (if you really must) a phone call. To register by comments, simply click “comments” at the bottom of this post. To register by email, send your info to ‘danny at pasadenadrive dot com”. To register by phone (if you must…seriously, get caught up with the rest of the world and use a computer), leave a message with your info…you’ve got my cell phone #.

Here’s what to include: name, shirt size, phone number (some way to get a hold of you…if you use the comments I’ll have have your email…you can’t post without it), and list anyone that’s coming with you that’s not participating in the contest. If you don’t want your name listed below, just let me know and I’ll make up a nickname for you.

Registration Fee for Bierfest is $20 per participant, and includes official Bierfest t-shirt*, beer, food, supplies, fun, and prizes for winners! We also need Judges. Judges need to commit the time of the contest to NO alcohol. They can drink after the contest is over, but not before or during…we need complete, impartial, accurate judging. There is NO COST for a judge.

How/when you you pay? Three options: 1) Bring it to Bierfest. 2) Mail your payment ahead of time (helps cover our up front costs). 3) Use Paypal. You can easily send a payment online quick and secure. All you have to do is click the beer mug at the bottom of this post! It will take you to the Paypal site with my info already there!!!

*due to lack of response on shirt sizes there will be NO Bierfest shirts this year…hopefully next year!

Finding The Bierfest Brew

June 13, 2007 By: Danny Category: Official Beer

Two months from this weekend is Bierfest! The event calls for an official brew to be used by all participants for all games. The organization committee has come up with a few guide lines for the official beer. Light, easy to drink, good taste, not too sweet, not too bitter, lower in alcohol (so no one dies in the first 20 minutes)…a true “session” beer. Something you could drink pint after pint of…which is what you’ll be doing!

I’ve tried many, as have other committee members. Here are a few of the beers we’ve sampled so far:

American
Karl Strauss’ “Woodie Gold”
Mexican
Tecate
German
Haufbrau
Spaten
Paulaner

Those last three are beers you would actually find at Oktoberfest in Germany - of which Bierfest is a derivative, so a German brew would be most appropriate.
As of today I believe that Paulaner is the best choice for Bierfest. It meets all of the above qualifications, and it tastes great!

Head to any respectable liquor store or a BevMo and you’ll find it there. Be sure to try Paulaner Original Munich Premium Lager, not the Hefe-Weisbier. Their website has some fun stuff on it, but be warned…even if you click “English” the site is still mostly in German…so if your Deutsch isn’t up to snuff it may be a bit frustrating.

Enough reading…go buy some beer! Try the Paulaner, and other stuff too. Let us know what you think in the comments - we’re still open to other ideas.

Even though we’ve got two months to go, we need to choose our beer by Mid-July so I can order the kegs.  Yes, I said kegs…plural.  It’s a drinking competition…you may NOT run out of beer during a drinking competition.Â
